General questions ❓
A quick overview of what we do, where we cover and who we work with.
What areas do you cover?
We’re based near Whaddon Road, Milton Keynes (MK17 0PR) and typically cover around a 25-mile radius. This includes places like:
- Bletchley, Central Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell and Wolverton.
- Buckingham, Winslow, Leighton Buzzard, Bedford and Towcester.
- Surrounding villages, farms and industrial estates.
If you’re slightly outside this area, get in touch – for the right job we may still be able to help or recommend a partner.
What types of vehicles do you work on?
We handle tyres for cars, vans, trucks, trailers, buses, horseboxes, agricultural machinery, plant, cranes and some OTR / earthmover equipment. In simple terms: if it’s on a farm, in a yard, on the road or on a site, we can normally help.
Are you a 24/7 service?
Yes – for breakdowns we operate a **24/7 on-call service**, particularly for trucks, trailers, plant and agricultural customers. Planned work is normally carried out in daytime working hours, but we can work around your shift patterns where needed.
For an immediate response, always call or WhatsApp: 07974 626045.
Mobile tyre fitting 🚐
How our mobile tyre service works at home, at work, on the farm or at the roadside.
Can you fit tyres at my home or workplace?
Yes. For cars and vans we regularly fit tyres at people’s homes, workplaces and depots. As long as we have safe access, a reasonably level surface and enough space to work around the vehicle, we can usually carry out the job there and then.
Should I send photos before you come out?
Photos are really useful – especially for truck, agricultural, plant and crane tyres. A quick picture of:
- The tyre damage.
- The sidewall showing the full tyre size.
- The overall vehicle / position on the vehicle.
helps us bring the correct replacement tyre and tools first time, which saves time and repeat visits. You can upload photos via the Breakdown Location Tool or WhatsApp us directly.
What equipment do your vans carry?
Our mobile fitting vans are kitted out with:
- Tyre changing machine and balancer (for car / van work).
- Heavy-duty jacks and truck bead breakers.
- Compressors, airline reels and torque wrenches.
- Repair materials, valves, balance weights and bead sealants.
For large OTR and some crane tyres we may work with specialist partners, but we still arrange and manage the job for you.
Car & van tyre questions 🚗
Everyday questions from car and van drivers about punctures, bookings and tyre choices.
Can you repair my puncture or will I need a new tyre?
We always repair where it’s safe and legal to do so, following the British Standard (BS AU 159). A puncture can usually be repaired if:
- The damage is in the central tread area (not the shoulder or sidewall).
- The tyre hasn’t been driven on flat for any distance.
- There are no visible splits, cords or internal heat damage.
If a repair isn’t safe, we’ll show you why and give clear options on replacement tyres.
What tyre brands do you supply for cars and vans?
We supply a mix of budget, mid-range and premium brands to suit your mileage and budget. On the booking form you can choose:
- Budget – sensible option for low annual mileage or vehicles being moved on.
- Mid-range – good quality at a sensible price for daily use.
- Premium – for higher mileage, performance vehicles or specific OE fitments.
- “Best advice” – tell us how you use the vehicle and we’ll recommend options.
Do you balance wheels and replace valves?
Yes – for car and van tyres we normally include:
- Fitting the tyre.
- New standard rubber valve (where required).
- Wheel balancing.
- Old casing disposal.
TPMS valves / sensors may need extra parts or coding – we’ll advise if that’s the case.
Truck, trailer, bus & coach 🚚
Fleet and commercial questions about roadside breakdowns, patterns and torque checks.
How do truck breakdowns work with Tuckwell Tyres?
For trucks, trailers and buses we operate a 24/7 roadside breakdown service. Typically:
- You or your driver calls / WhatsApps the details and location.
- We confirm the tyre size, position and load so we bring the right casing.
- We attend on site, change or repair the tyre where safe, and torque wheel fixings.
- Photos and notes can be added to your digital job record if required.
Regular fleet customers can have agreed rates and response time expectations in place.
Do you do steer, drive and trailer tyre inspections?
Yes – we can carry out yard inspections for rigids, artics and trailers, including:
- Tread depth checks and visual damage inspections.
- Pressure checks (where access allows).
- Recommendations for replacements and rotations.
- Flagging of tyres that should not be sent out on the road.
This can be logged in a simple report so you can plan tyre spend instead of reacting to failures.
Do you re-torque wheel nuts after fitting?
After fitting truck and bus tyres we torque wheel fixings to the correct setting. We strongly recommend:
- A re-torque after the vehicle has covered around 30–60 miles, where practical.
- Regular wheel security checks as part of your fleet routine.
We can also help with wheel security toolbox talks and information for your drivers.
Agricultural & farm tyres 🚜
Tractor, trailer and telehandler tyre questions for farms and contractors.
What agricultural machines do you support?
We work with a wide range of agricultural equipment including:
- Tractors, loaders and telehandlers.
- Grain and silage trailers, tankers and implements.
- Combines, sprayers and spreaders.
We can come to the yard or field, depending on access and ground conditions.
Can you deal with water-ballasted or filled tyres?
Yes – but these jobs need planning. Please tell us if a tyre is:
- Water-ballasted or filled with any product.
- Running with wheel weights or twin setups.
We’ll discuss the safest way to handle the tyre, minimise mess and keep downtime under control.
Can you advise on patterns and pressures for field and road work?
We’re happy to give practical advice on tread patterns, ballasting and tyre pressures, especially where machines are doing both field and road work. Getting pressures right can:
- Improve traction and reduce soil damage.
- Cut fuel usage.
- Extend tyre life and reduce sidewall damage.
Plant & crane tyres 🏗️
Support for telehandlers, access platforms, site plant and crane tyres.
What plant and crane equipment do you cover?
We regularly work on:
- Telehandlers and site loaders.
- Access platforms and MEWPs.
- Small cranes and specialist lifting equipment.
For larger crane and heavy industrial tyres we can arrange work through trusted partners while still managing the job for you.
Can you attend busy sites and yards?
Yes – we’re used to working on construction sites, quarries, recycling yards and industrial units. We’ll coordinate with site managers regarding access, permits and safety rules. Please mention:
- If special PPE, inductions or permits are required.
- Any time restrictions or noise limits.
OTR & earthmover tyres 🛞
Larger quarry, recycling and earthmover tyres handled via specialist support.
Do you handle large OTR and earthmover tyres?
We can arrange inspection, repairs and replacement for many OTR and earthmover applications using specialist equipment and partners. In practical terms this means:
- You contact us first with sizes, site location and photos.
- We assess what’s needed and coordinate with the right support team.
- You keep one point of contact – Tuckwell Tyres – for updates and invoicing.
Breakdowns & call-outs 🚨
What to do when a tyre lets you down and how our breakdown process works.
What’s the fastest way to get help in a breakdown?
The quickest way is to use our Breakdown Location Tool or call us directly:
- Use breakdown.php to send your GPS, reg, tyre size and photo.
- Or call / WhatsApp 07974 626045.
This gives us everything we need to find you and bring the right tyre, rather than going back and forth.
Should I keep driving on a flat or damaged tyre?
No. Driving on a flat or badly under-inflated tyre can:
- Destroy the tyre beyond repair.
- Damage the rim or wheel assembly.
- Make the vehicle unstable and dangerous.
If it’s safe, pull over, put hazards on and call for help. We’re happy to talk you through options.
Booking slots & lead times 📅
How the online booking system works and when you can choose AM / PM.
Why can’t I book for today?
The online booking form is for planned work, not emergency breakdowns. We need time to:
- Source the correct tyres.
- Plan routes for the vans.
- Fit bookings around existing call-outs and farm / fleet work.
That’s why the earliest online slot is normally tomorrow afternoon. For anything urgent, please use the Breakdown page or call us directly.
What does AM / PM mean on the booking form?
We work in time windows rather than exact appointment times:
- AM: roughly 09:00–12:30
- PM: roughly 13:00–17:00
Within that window we’ll aim to give you a rough ETA once we know routing and where breakdowns are that day.
Payments, pricing & quotes 💳
How we charge for tyres, call-outs and repairs, and how you can pay.
How do I pay for tyre work?
For most one-off jobs we take payment by:
- Card (where available).
- Bank transfer.
Fleet, farm and regular business customers can open an account with agreed terms. If you’d like to discuss this, contact us.
What affects the price of a job?
Pricing is based on a few things:
- Tyre size and brand.
- Type of vehicle (car, truck, tractor, plant etc).
- Travel distance and whether it’s a breakdown or planned job.
- Time of day and urgency (normal hours vs night / weekend call-out).
We aim to be straightforward on costs and will always quote before fitting where possible.
Fleet & farm accounts 📊
For haulage fleets, farms and larger businesses who want a structured tyre partner.
Can we set up a fleet or farm account?
Yes – we work with haulage fleets, local businesses, farms and contractors on account. This usually includes:
- Agreed call-out and hourly rates.
- Standard tyre options by size and position.
- Regular yard checks or inspections (if required).
- Simple reporting so you can see where tyre spend is going.
If you’d like to discuss an account, please get in touch with Tuckwell Tyres.
Tyre law & safety ⚖️
Basic legal and safety points – we’re not lawyers, but these are key things drivers should know.
What is the legal minimum tread depth?
For most cars and light vans in the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the full circumference.
In practice we recommend changing tyres before they reach that point – wet grip and braking performance start to drop well before the legal minimum.
Is sidewall damage safe to repair?
No – sidewall cuts, bulges or exposed cords are not repairable and are unsafe to continue using. These tyres will need replacing. We’ll always show you the damage and explain the reason if we recommend replacement rather than repair.
Technical tyre questions 🔧
Understanding tyre sizes, load ratings and why tyres wear the way they do.
How do I read my tyre size?
A typical car tyre size might look like 205/55R16 91V. In simple terms:
- 205 – tyre width in millimetres.
- 55 – aspect ratio (height as a % of width).
- R16 – radial construction, 16-inch rim diameter.
- 91 – load index.
- V – speed rating.
On truck, agri and plant tyres, the markings are slightly different but the principle is the same – they define the size, load and speed capability of the tyre.
Why is my tyre wearing on one edge?
Uneven wear can be caused by a few things:
- Misalignment (tracking) issues.
- Incorrect pressures.
- Suspension or steering component wear.
- Overloading or regular high-load use.
We can advise what we see on the tyre and suggest next steps – such as an alignment check or pressure adjustment – to prevent repeat issues.
Digital reports, photos & records 📱
How we log work and how you can use tyre reports for compliance and planning.
Do you provide digital job sheets and tyre reports?
Yes – we use a digital job system so every job can include:
- Tyre positions and sizes.
- Tread depths and pressures (where checked).
- Photos of damage, new tyres and wheel assemblies.
- Notes on any advisories or follow-up work.
This is especially useful for fleets, plant and agricultural customers who need evidence for compliance and maintenance records.
